Is those things arms, or is they legs?

That reminds me of a piece of verse that I read in Arnold Silcock's
Verse and Worse:

Long before I was Solomon and you were the Queen of Sheba
We lived life togther..as one amoeba.
......
Anon came division, fission, and divorce...
A lonely pseudopodium, I wandered on my course.

(The first two lines are not verbatim, but I have never forgotten the last two.)

That book is one of my favourites...

Deepa.

Personally, I think "The Octopus" is unmatched :-)

Tell me, O Octopus, I begs
Is those things arms, or is they legs?
I marvel at thee, Octopus;
If I were thou, I'd call me Us.
