I recommend staying at the Green Hotel (http://www.greenhotelindia.com/). It is a Heritage hotel that is beautifully preserved. And they have an excellent breakfast. They are pricey, though. If you have the time and inclination, go visit R.K. Narayan's house in Yadavagiri. There are also many good places to eat in Mysore.
