I have never figured out how the economics of this works.

I was once shown a Laptop bought in Singapore by someone and he got it dirt
cheap apparently. I was told never to buy a laptop in India but to buy one in
Singapore. In those days a low end laptop was about 60,000 in India. But a
flight to Singapore and Hotel stay, travel as well as the laptop would cost
me more than 60,000.

In an earlier era I was asked how much I bought a TV set for in Manchester.
When I said 100 Pounds - I was informed that the person who asked me that
question could have got me the same set for 90 pounds in Tottenham Court Road
in London. Great - but a return train ticket would have set me back by 40
pounds.

What is the exact advantage other than avoiding Indian taxes. You're coughing
up more, or at best the same amount?
