I have developed a theory, and gamed it to boot, to demonstrate that any "owning up" or identification with a Hindu identity gets dubbed as "Rightwing Hindu extremism". Merely identifying onself as belonging to any other faith does not lead to such an automatic classification. There is, therefore a tendency among many Hindus to play down their Hindu identity in public and in mixed cultural company, while they remain as Hindu as can be in private.
