Building web-based slideshows and uploading them to your own website
is a decent option. Except, you lose the community features of sites
like flickr, tools to organize and categorize your photos (flickr's
geotagging tool, for example, is convenient) and the ability to reach
a wider audience (It is a PITA to tell my friends when I have uploaded
new photos. With flickr, they see it in their friends stream quite
easily). I have also not come up with a good way of publishing my tag
cloud through self-published galleries.
None of the open source tools I have used in the past (gPhoto,
Gallery, etc.) are close to the feature set I want from my photo
editing, management and publishing tool I want asa prosumer. The
closest commercial tool I have found is Adobe Lightroom.
