"Open source is a relatively new concept in India," says Hariharan of
the Open Source Foundation /me glares at Venky

I guess I have to agree with Venky Hariharan to a certain degree, because the adoption rates are dismally low. Pirated commercial stuff is viewed as the default option by many users. Although among the techie crowd, there is some level of awareness of what is Open Source and why it is a contender to closed source, commercial software at many levels, there is not enough interest generated to adopt more. Why, many developers I interview for work at my firm, know zilch about Open Source. The only thing they think is Open Source is Linux. Well, I don't want to get started on it.

I met this interesting person called Arun Khan recently. Thank you, Valsa. Arun and I have some kind of similar goals in this regard. Increase Open Source awareness at the grass roots level. Arun is trying very hard to get Universities and Colleges to create a curriculum around Open Source. I am doing what I can to unseat commercial closed source at the Small and Medium Businesses. So let us see if we are able to make any headway in about a year or so.
