Here in Vancouver, there is Mandarin immersion, starting in grade 4, and our son is going into it next fall. To get in, you have to prove that the kid *does* have excellent English competency and have to assert that he/she does not already know Mandarin. He's had a head start (already knows multiple languages) but is enthralled at the idea of learning Chinese. He'll be a visible minority; the program is mostly full of the kids of Nth-generation Vancouver ethnic Chinese who feel bad about having lost the language. Seems like a kid competent in English and Mandarin has a leg up in the world. -T
