The second half of the book drags on too long. By then the blasphemy is over and the novelty wears thin. To an Indian all those Indian references can be fascinating including "Chatnapatna" - a thinly disguised description of our very own Channapatna. Apart from the blasphemy Rushdie retains his fascinating linguistic ability - like when he describes a man spitting from a bus in Mumbai - "A long glutinous arc of spit.." But it all breaks down by the second half and when a book gets boring it fails to retain enough attraction for me to make a detailed note of exactly what is boring. shiv
