- Google and Viacom are about set some seriously scary precedents in online
privacy and copyright laws. And given Google's stand that IPs are not
PII[1], it looks like they will give Viacom the stuff they're looking for.
Oh, they are certainly not PII - no matter what working party 19 of the
Euro Parl concluded.
However, I don't understand why Viacom would want user logins if they don't
intend to go after the consumers. Some very odd stuff going on in this case.
It is simple. Saves them a LOT of time if they cross reference logins,
profile email addresses etc.
There have been a few fun cases where RIAA subpoenas have been sent to IPs
that were actually permanently assigned to a university laser printer
(duke? tufts?)
