Just a guess, and it won't be the only reason.

However, theoretical considerations would indicate that the *price* of a
good tends to the *marginal cost of duplication* over time. And when
that is artificially prevented from happening, there will be tension in
the system. This is what we're seeing happening, when the marginal cost
of duplication of any digital good tends toward zero.
