BSNL's EVDO data cards don't have roaming and are limited to 144

The speed is dependant on the exchange. 144 kbps is the limit for all
CDMA 1x (called 1xRTT, I think) exchanges. For EVDO capable exchanges,
I've seen speeds upto 1 Mbps. I have not been able to find a list of
exchanges and their capabilities, but the Indiranagar exchange is EVDO
capable.

So, true 3G services is already being provided by BSNL in some places at least.
Not sure what they meant by May release. I saw a chap (in August last year)
streaming two Youtube videos simultaneously using the BSNL EVDO data card in
the Cunningham Road area of Bangalore. Surely that's not possible on 144 kbps.

Also, the DoT asked BSNL and MTNL last month to stop offering 3G services
(namely EVDO data cards, I'm guessing) due to security concerns, and BSNL
refused to comply saying snooping was possible already: http://bit.ly/HKoQd

The ZTE cards work reasonably well with GNU/Linux.

The ZTE card repeatedly crashed my system with the Linux 2.6.27-11-generic
kernel / Ubuntu 8.10. YMIsV, I suppose.
