Well the first thing I thought about was that a fairer complexion would automatically result in greater contrast, especially in a black and white photograph. Given that, I tried to find out if it was established that women are on the average fairer than the men (and this could be the antecedent for the popular expression "the fairer sex" when referring to women). I was unfortunately not able to find any. Interestingly, this was posted on an email group for HCI/UX professionals with the subject "Next Time You Need To PhotoShop A Photo". Kiran
