In Calcutta, I went through the 11 plus 3 system; one had to choose one's
"stream" (Science, Commerce or Arts..they are mutually exclusive, you
see!)...and one went straight to one's undergrad studies. There was also a
system in the bachelor's degree, that one could opt for an Honours degree.
If one did "well" enough in that ( =got enough marks), and presented a
dissertation to the satisfaction of the academics (and a nasty collection of
dried-up old crones they were), your Honours degree was upgraded in two
years' time to a Master's Degree.

Oh...this is now a HUGE industry. And very little regulated.
