I was in the early teens then, but have fond memories of those Sunday
mornings as well, for the Mahabharata, not the Ramayana. Mahabharata had a
few good actors, which meant it was good in parts. Ramayana was a bit
unbearable even to my grandmother who would complain about the slow plot
advancement (though we still watched it).

It clearly was a phenomenon, and for a brief while, it did bring India
together. It was universally loved and watched, by Hindus as well as those
of other religions (at least in Kerala, not sure about other states).
