Have you ever tried going a few weeks without consuming news or
analysis or news media of any form - I mean cold turkey, no way to
whet your appetite. No TV, no radio, no blogs, no podcasts, no
magazines, no newspapers. It's remarkably productive.

As a side effect of course you will be exempt from most hallway
conversations since you'll have no idea what they are talking about;
but it's a relief to not care about anything other than what
immediately concerns you. It's great for self reflection and analysis.

And then you wonder, given most of the things we read about we can't
control in the least or prepare for, why do we consume news?

Reporting in a pack makes it possible to give the news audience
something to collectively worry about. If every newspaper reported
about something different then hallway conversations would mostly
consist of people who have no idea what each other is talking about.
