It was a very generous act for someone I barely knew. I still have that modem. We met for the first and only time twelve years later, in June 2009, when I was passing through Kerala. He insisted on paying for my hotel room because he didn't have a spare bed, and hosted me for breakfast at his house the next morning. Then he gave me a ride from Alleppey to Cochin.
