Where is India's Grapes of wrath? In a country of a billion people
surely there isn't a shortage of human saga? Is it hard to rage
against bad politicians like Hunter S Thompson did in a country like
India?

I was reminded of this pet peeve of mine while reading
http://www.historytoday.com/mihir-bose/india%E2%80%99s-missing-historians

Indian kids get the beware-of-life lecture rather early. I never paid
much attention to this, but I know that most Indians view life as a
gladiatorial contest and kick and shove their way through school,
college, jobs and life. Life without its routines and habits would be
impossible, and Indians certainly have their routines to keep them
busy. Sadly India isn't alone, I haven't read much contemplation of
the modern Chinese condition either from within China, even though
Jiang Rong's Wolf Totem is excellent.

I think I know what keeps such populous nations from expressing
themselves, poverty, but what's the fix?
