That's precisely why the EC's stand raises questions. Why can't they come clean? Why do they insist that Indian EVMs simple can't be tampered with while EVMs all over the world are tamperable. The German Supreme Court, incidentally, has struck down the use of EVMs as being unconstitutional under German norms of democracy.
