The should be selling news and analysis and independent journalism, but advertisers want lots of customers and positive articles. Unfortunately by providing puff pieces and advertorial newspapers instead of news, newspapers will lose readers to places where they can get actual news and analysis - primarily online. Which causes a vicious circle - newspapers are caught in a race to the bottom. Readers are no longer willing to pay directly for news, I know I'm not. (Well except for the New York Times. I picked up a Sunday New York Times on my way out of San Francisco last week. I'm still willing to pay for the gray lady.) -- Charles
