After 2 hours of walking this morning all these messages seem less dire;-) portion size is a very tricky thing - - my dietitian suggests that anything that doesn't fit into the cup of my palm (no overspill allowed) is too much. portion size distortion is in every culture and certainly existed before market-led introduction of American foods. We are witnessing a trend in Western Canada right now of "miniaturization": mini-doughnuts, mini-cupcakes, mini-icecream. These portions were all the regular portions in the 50s in the US and certainly people were a lot thinner. But then there were so many other factors: no 24 hour TV, no Internet, separation of job and home, traditional nuclear family with mom at home to mind your diet, no or few suburbs, more time spent outdoors as children and adults, etc, etc.
Reversing diabetes will require not just cutting sugar or reducing the foods one eats but a wholesale reinvention of one's life. A bit like giving up smoking - you lose all your friends because they were part of that lifestyle. welcome to your unAmerican life! “Be careful what you water your dreams with. Water them with worry and fear and you will produce weeds that choke the life from your dream. Water them with optimism and solutions and you will cultivate success. Always be on the lookout for ways to turn a problem into an opportunity for success. Always be on the lookout for ways to nurture your dream." ~ Lao Tzu (courtesy -Peacefrog)
