When I first started studying CS, there was no "CS" program we were part of either the Applied Physics and Information Science department (at UCSD) or part of Applied Math (at Berkeley.) While I also dropped out, I did formally study both CS and Math (in particular abstract algebra and number theory) and I still love both. I know a number of the luminaries from that age still love CS and would work in the field even without pay. -- Charles
