I think that responses are only expected when follow-up posters have questions that the original author can address.
If the original poster was requesting advice or assistance, it is mannerly to either reply privately thanking those who respond or to post a follow-up summarizing the advice or assistance and thanking those who replied.
There is no requirement to respond to flames, arguments, tangents, or thread drift. Nothing, said masterfully enough, is often an appropriate response.
