One of the books I read compared the conscious mind to a man with the
megaphone, who goes around shouting "pay attention to me".  The
subconscious mind is the man with the quite voice.  When you are
operating normally, the conscious mind is in control, and you direct
your attention to where he wants you to.  When you are relaxed, for
example, in the shower or in the throne room or in that
not-yet-asleep-but-almost-there state, the conscious mind puts its
megaphone down and your unconscious mind gets a chance to direct your
attention.
