Promise of a Metropolis by Janki Nair is the best book about Bangalore in
English. Bangalore Through the Centuries by Fazlul Hasan is dated, but
still very good.

If you read Kannada, you should pick up Ba Na Sundaes Rao's comprehensive
book on Bangalore's history.
