My third attempt: Electrodes about 1.5" apart, instead of 1".
This time, I left it alone for about 50 minutes. The positive electrode's surface started to turn gray after at least 20 minutes, like it was being etched a little. The negative electrode began to accumulate silver fuzzies *very slowly*. At the end, I was able to carefully remove the negative electrode without leaving any of the "fuzz" in the water. The preparation is entirely colorless. So, there's no way of knowing what I've got without making some kind of measurement? Is there any way to test the concentration of silver in these solutions? Some kind of titration? Like add a drop of this, add a drop of something else as an indicator, and add drops of whatchmacallit until it turns color? Just a crude go/no go check to make sure you have at least something in suspension, and not way too much would be fine by me. Anyway, get the variables worked out once, and not much is going to change. But how do you get it calibrated? I suppose some of you went through this nit-picky phase until you decided it's just not that important. :-) Thanks to Marsha, Donna, and others for their encouragement!
