All sounds normal so far. > Yesterday he made a batch, and was astonished to see that the > glass had been "silvered" -- that is, the inside of the glass was > coated with silver. If you allow the electrodes to get too near the glass, you will literally silver coat the glass near them. So definitely, there's the potential to coat the glass. I normally see a gradual darkening of the glass over several batches, just as you describe. I've seen no *noticeable* difference in the product between freshly cleaned and after several batches. I know we've been told to clean everything *every* time, but I'm lazy enough to have tried it without. Obviously *some* of the silver is plating out on the glass. So this does remove some of it from the product. I don't think it goes on forever, though, since I've had batches survive for weeks, and still have obvious silver content (color), and be effective in use. > it was now in a container separate from the glass it > was made in, and the inside of the jar where he had stored it, was > also silver. So it will further degrade the product. But again, I suspect that once the glass is coated, the process will slow down. Otherwise we'd be losing *all* the silver at some point, and I've never seen that with this kind of CS. As to cleaning the glass, I've heard about vinegar. I've also used silver or copper polish, which takes it off *instantly*. But, in either case, you *must* thoroughly wash and multiple rinse the glassware before using it. You don't want any cleaner residue left over. Be well, Mike D.
