I must be missing something here. Is there something "wrong" with solder, or is it just inconvenient??

Solder becomes *mandatory* when your connection will be subjected to mechanical stress, bending, vibration, or corrosive environments. Electronic equipment is soldered because it is assumed that it will be subjected to *all* of these! My only caution would be to check the resistance and/or re-make the joints every once in awhile. If things get damp and the wires start to tarnish you could lose your connection.
