Bob, Thanks much for the excellent post and all of the math! I have some questions as to other things happening simultaneously in the CS generator cell which will affect the actual quantity in the finished product:
It seems in my first reading that it was assumed that all electrons in the process went to producing silver ions , all of which stay suspended in the water. Since this is not completely the case, if you can figure in several more electro-chemical processes that are going on simultaneously, we'll get a bit closer yet to a number that may reflect the CS content: <1> Hydrogen gas is evolved at the cathode; this process uses some of the energy in the process. Oxygen gas is evolved atthe Anode, and also uses some of the energy in the process. Can we calculate how much, and correct for this? <2> Some oxygen combines with silver in the surface of the anode, as evidenced by the darkening of the anode's surface; this should also use some of the energy in the process. Can we calculate how much, and figure how to adjust the numbers for this? <3> Positively charged Silver ions in suspension are drawn towards the cathode; when some of them make contact, they gain an electron and are reduced to uncharged silver metal particles, an accumulation of which becomes visible as the greyish buildup of 'sludge' or crud on the surface of the cathode. [Some stop their process as this buildup becomes visible to remove this buildup by wiping it off the surface of the cathode, to avoid having it re-dispersed into the water by the accellerating hydrogen gas evolution at higher current flow levels.] This observable process removes a lot of the silver from the water; the higher the concentration, the more that builds up on the cathode surface... can we calculate this and subtract the result from the numbers? <4> In making CS in pure distilled water, the yellow color becomes evident, as yellow light is reflected from particles of silver smaller than a certain size. Many in their generating process observe a yellow coating on the inner surface of their glass generator container after emptying the finished product, which is composed of plated -out silver particles removed from the process by this action. Can this loss be calculated and subtracted from the origional numbers? The pure math for one part of the process does bring us part way, but needs 'adjusting' for so many other simultaneous actions also occurring in the generator cell, that I begin to fear that math alone will not give us a relevant indication of the actual silver content. From my observation at this point of all of the ways that energy is also used and silver is removed/lost again from the generator cell, I expect that we may find ourselves back to an actual measurement process in order to have a number we can actually use. Further possible 'deterioration' through exposure to light and air will result in a gradual decrease in usable silver subsequent to the generation process; even moving the product into another container probably results in some silver plating out on the surface of that container, as discussed recently on the list. I enjoy the math and the opportunity to get a close look at this aspect of the electrochemical process, and am greatful for it's presentation; however, for those of us who want to know how much silver we are actually injesting, I suspect we need to use a direct measurement method to have meaningful, usable information...
