You're right, but the key phrase is "after a fashion". To know what
you have will *still* require you to have your CS tested by other
means to establish a baseline for what your TDS readings actually
mean. You'll need to send multiple samples through Bob B., CSPro,
your local environmental lab, or somebody.

In the end it'll end up costing you more than 20 bucks to do the
additional testing, plus you'll also want to buy some calibration
solutions along with the meter.

You'll end up with a way to verify that you're still making it the
same way over time. The problem is, if you change anything, run
longer than you had tested, move the electrodes, etc. -- all bets are
off, and your TDS readings will not necessarily be accurate with the
new process. Anything that changes the particle size or (fill in
the blank!) could affect the calibration of the readings.

The only other thing you could do would be to exactly duplicate
another person's setup who has done the outside testing, and then see
if your TDS meter (using the same calibration standards from Hanna)
gives you similar readings.

In any case, it's at least useful for checking your distilled water!
