Borax and water is *very* good for cutting down toxicity of some
things, I don't know why. Vinegar and water is good for some molds, but
borax will cut chemicals and kill mold and insects too. If you get more
molds growing from the damp carpeting, it could make the problem worse.
I get very concerned when hear about people getting carpet damp or wet-
but maybe you are just settling the dust. Damp carpet grows a huge
number of unsavory things. I used to spinkle a bit of dry borax on the
carpet, or even baking soda, then vacuum it up, for a non toxic
cleaning. I don't think you would want to do that if your lungs are a
problem, though, since vacuuming throws up more dust, and also the
borax in the air is not so good if you already have particulates in the
air.
the intake vent idea is a good one. Can you take off the vent cover,
cover it with a filter and put it back on? Or just replacing the
furnace filter with the highest rated one you can get- a MERV 12 is
about as good as I have been able to find around here.
Hepa filters are just the greatest at removing particulates, and if
they have a carbon prefilter like my Honeywell Quietcare does, it also
gets organic chemicals. I think they are around 100 to 150 dollars.
I covered my heat vent with a plastic bag and taped it down, and I have
a hepa filter I can run. Keeping one room in the house as a "safe" room
has been SOP (standard operating procedure) for 3 or 4 years.
Best Wishes,

List - everyone;
thanks for the suggestions.
Marshall - great website for "HEPA air purifiers"; will try that.
They were a little pricey, but they are better than the ones from the
"Sharper Image".
to the Clayton family - as I can, due to water restrictions, I am
doing that... hosing down the windows every 3rd night or so and also
the outside porch. I am also spraying watered down vinegar and water
on carpet areas - then vaccumming. And mopping on hardwood floors -
anything I can to cut down on the carcinogenic effect this will have
on the house....
I suppose I will be okay, as I am pretty healthy, but it's like I
said; if it gets much worse, then elderly friends and friends of
friends I want to try to help because my area has a lot of retirees
and elderly on nebulizers and oxygen, already. I'm surprised they
haven't been crowding the emergency rooms. I want to be ahead of
the game. We tried putting damp towels over the intake vent, but it
sucked it all the way in........LOL
And as Red Skelton used to say; "and to all a Good Night"
