Ruth, I am just coming in on your emails so I hope Im not repeating someone else s advice. Do you live near a health food store where you can buy organic plain yogurt that has probiotics in it? It will help with gas and cramping and you can mix it with fresh fruit in between meals. Or you can make some yogurt with regular milk, preferably organic, if you have access to a gas oven.
I think someone else just suggested probiotics in capsules. They sell all kinds at the health food store or online. Apple juice is good and drink lots of clean water. Can you tolerate adding uncooked olive oil or sesame oil on your veggies, brown rice or whole wheat pasta to lubricate your intestines naturally? Chop a little ginger and cook with your animal protein or veggies. It will help with stomach problems and gas. Garlic would be good too, preferably a little uncooked with veggies. Do you add sea salt to your meals? You may need a little if you get dehydrated from an over active bowel. Have you had your thyroid tested to make sure youre not hypothyroid? There is a test you can do yourself by putting a thermometer inside your armpit before getting out of bed in the morning. Someone on the list may know the approximate range of body temperature for low thyroid. Im sure its below 98. Thyroid meds can increase your metabolism and change your bowel habits. There are natural thyroid prescriptions like Armour. Before you sleep laying on your back, rub your abdomen from the navel outward in circular motion clockwise. Besides prunes, dates are really good for constipation. Peanut butter is helpful on toast or celery. You should be eating multigrain breads and peanut butter with no additives except salt. Strawberry rhubarb pie is good if you want to stay away from taking herbs. God bless you, Jess -----Original Message----- From: ruth strackbein [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, June 23, 2007 2:11 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: CS>Re: Digestion System Problems Hi, Libertytrek, Treblclef, I am planning to work with this Dr. for awhile yet. I have bi weekly consultations with him via phone. He doesn't use e-mail, but I call in with questions and progress reports or lack of it. His nurse alerts him and he calls me back. There is no charge for this service. Trouble is he is very busy, does these consultations between doing scheduled surgical procedures. I plan to write him a letter about some of my concerns, for instance, he would like me to use Citrucel which is his fiber of choice. I object because of the sugar in the orange can and the additives in the blue can. I think there is another kind now that is a clear stuff. He is, of course, totally unacquainted with such things as Bentonite Clay withpsyllium, etc. My son has given me a can of Fiberzon that he recommends. It works for him and for my second son as well, however, there is such a bewildering mixture of herbs listed that I am leery of it. Also John says it produces an urge that you have to attend to immediately if not sooner. I do eat a diet that consists prinicipally of fruits and vegetables, chicken, turkey, beef , fish . There are so many foods that react against the pain under my right ribcage (center) . or else against the lower right corner of my abdomen, probably the ileocecal region. What works for the one area seems to work against the other. None of the doctors are promising that all my pain will be gone as a aresult of this surgery, but it is hoped that if I no longer have to have sessions of straining or else too many stools ( often require straining, too, and my overlong bowel getting filled up and causing pressure. Think gas builds up in there, too. Transit time is 7-8 days mouth to rectum. Ten years ago it was 5 days. At present I will soon be 79 and will be living in my 80th year. This surgeon is reluctant to do this surgery because of my age, and also, presently I am underweight ., though gaining a little this week. Thanks for your concern. I will suggest the program you have listed.
