Check out the "Midge" Woodgas Stove. This is a stove that
cooks with wood gas and is very efficient with few
emissions. You can cook on very little fuel, even trash
fuel, with this simple stove which can be made out of tin

Batteries are normally chemically powered.
You can make a battery from a bottle or water, other containers,
a hole in the ground, and many ways.
However good batteries of any capacity are not cheap and usually out of
reach of primitive countries.
I have a friend that travels to primitive countries and is building a
cheap stove so they can cook supper. It takes an average of 6 hours
hunting and gathering junk sticks and wood to cook supper each day.
The cost of the stove is about $ 20.00
It could be easier to give them a bicycle with a generator or alternator
installed.
