I'm afraid i'm a bit technologically challenged so if I'm talking utter crap ignore me :-) but I've got a couple of torches and radio that don't use batteries, you just wind them up to generate the electricity, Would it be possible to adapt something like that?
If they work a short time after you do the winding, I guess the spring energy is stored and there is in fact no batteries in them.
