Well, I am not sure. I do know that I can't tolerate any kind of fresh
water algae, but I can eat sea water kelp, in limited amounts. For me
and the kelp, it seems like the kelp is a close enough relation to some
fungus. I know it is not a fungus, but I only like to eat small amounts
of it. I can not have any fresh water algae at all.
When I was in college, I took botany, and our professor told us very
strictly to stay completly away from any fresh water algae, that they
were all poisonous, some of them extremely so, and we should even avoid
walking in a rain puddle that had algae growing in it- he was that
strict. On the other hand, he also said that nearly all ocean kelp was
good to eat, but certainly macrocystis kelp, and if I wanted to, I
could harvest my own, dry it and boil it up. It really stinks when it
washes up, though. I just buy mine.
Once I tried taking some blue green algae from Oregon (MLM company) and
it made my tongue hurt.
