I walk a couple miles at the beach with my neighbor's golden retriever. He
loves to get out there and walk and so do I, but the walking does nothing to
alleviate the muscle cramps. I have also tried stretching exercises, but they
didn't seem to help. Maybe I didn't give them a good enough try.

Thank you.

  Respected Faith

I don’t know about CS for cramps .. dunno ‘bout the doctor either, and I have
my doubts about the neuro-specialist.

There is a point directly underneath the separation of the nostrils. When you
feel the cramps apply a slight pressure there in a clockwise motion. This must
ease away the cramp, or finish it.

A little bit of salt under the tongue might also help.

  * Are your feet cold at night - are they covered appropriately? And what
about the floor you walk on? Do you walk bare-footed on the tiles?

  * Do you walk enough (exercising the legs, breathing deeply, walking even
bare-footed, either on the grass or on the sand –either moist or dry- of a
beach)?

  * In the morning after getting up (or, if you remember, at night before
going to bed) stretch the each calf of the legs like this:

Lean in a more or less 45 degree angle against the wall, arms stretched,
fingers up to the wall, legs and knees not bending and heels ON the floor (if
ye can’t keep the heels on the floor, move the feet a little bit forward ..
however: keep the knees straight!) Keep your chin up to avoid the buttocks
going up – the body must remain in a straight line, much as if there is a plank
glued to your back.

Now bend ONLY the elbows –without allowing your body to curve-, as if you do
push-ups against the wall. Feel the calves being stretched .. feel a slight
tension there (this is what matters for you) – and in back of the knees, and
maybe also in the thighs.

Bend through the elbows three times, stand up, move the knees a bit and
repeat the three bends. Repeat the cycle three times.

This exercise has two benefits: 1 It activates the circulation in the legs
(and so works against cramps),

and 2 it is a good starter for the abdominal functions in the morning.

  Hope this helps,
