Could it be that in Ireland they use  Imperial Gallons, meaning 4.54609 litres as opposed to USA Gallons 3.7854 litres?

In Australia, the price of petrol for (in my neck of the woods) :
-  a USA gallon of unleaded petrol AU $5.22 = US$4.89
- Imperial gallon of unleaded petrol UA$6.27 = US$5.87

Prices vary daily and per region with as much as 10 cents per litre cheaper in the bigger cities, and up to 20 cents per litre dearer in further remote areas.
