In the stuff I have been reading, 2,000 IU's a day is a good amount.

In the alternative health circles, much higher amounts are fine. I was taking 400 IUs a day with not much to show for it. When I upped it to 2000 a day, I had imporvement. I plan to continue this until summer comes along. I have also been using a tanning bed with UV B, and that helped on the day I used it, but just did not get out of the house much in order to go, maybe only once every 2 or 3 weeks, and from what I read, it is needed 2x a week, minimum once a week.
