Georgia,
Several things are going on here. One, your daughter
is young and really doesn't have a lot of experience
with caring for herself. Probably is use to Mom
caring for her, plus the young often think there are
indispensable. But when infection comes, so does pain
and fever making it very hard to make a good decision.
At the same time, everybody has the desire to survive
and will do whatever it takes.
So when does one decide to do the alternative vrs. the
antibiotic. For one thing, it often takes a lot of
vigilance with alternative methods. They work, but
sometimes takes longer and round the clock
application. IF THE INFECTION IS SPREADING FASTER
THAN THE PERSON CAN ADDRESS IT WITH OTHER METHODS,
then an antibiotic is the better route, imo.
Your daughter has a serious condition. It can get
very serious. As I mentioned on another list, if the
infection is in the lower jaw, it can spread to the
throat causing the windpipe to swell leading to death.
If in the upper jaw, it can go into the sinuses and
brain. You already mentioned a cyst from it. It can
cause jaw bone loss. This is serious and I believe
your daughter knows that. I would trust your daughter
in her desire to have the antibiotic. It is the
infection that is the enemy, not the drug.
The problem with wisdom teeth is that there is usually
not enough room for them. That plus people usually
don't clean as thoroughly as they should which then
leads to bacteria causing infection. If your children
will brush and floss deligantly, then they can prevent
future problems even with the crowding. However, most
aren't as thorough as they should be, especially the
very young.
The dentist is also not the enemy. He is simply
giving you his advice based on his years of experience
seeing what comes into his office. Like I said, most
just don't brush/floss as thoroughly as they should
and that is where the problem starts.
