Does anyone know if HIPS (high density polystyrene) out gases VOC's?
It
is used in refridgerator liners.
HIPS is made by adding a catalyst to the styrene monomer. The
catalyst it typically completely used up, but there can be traces of
the monomer that never polymerize, and will over time outgas. Styrene
is pretty nasty stuff.
I thought I remembered something vague about styrene being bad... and I
was trying to think of ways to outgas it a bit before using it. Heat
usually works in general. Maybe putting a portable heater in front of
it? hmmm.
Same questions about Saniprene? the clear
plastic used in refridgerator bins?
Not familiar with that plastic. Is that a brand of a standard plastic?
As far as I can tell, it is a tradename..... "Goodrich SANIPRENE code
1005 is a hard rubber for smaller tanks which are ....." but this
seems to refer to a tank liner for phos acid, which might be different
than the pretty clear trays they put inside the fridges. Maybe there
are different formulas, some seem to be on parts lists. I would like to
trust that the manufacturers would only use healthy material, or inert
material, but I am afraid they might not. Rubber ought to be better
than plastic. That softish white plastic in most of them is pretty
stinky, and stinky is not good.
Thanks, Marshall,
