Only if you want to make a hobby out of it.
Not necessary at all.
A cheap pocket laser pointer from a dollar store tells you via Tyndall
effect, that you've got something in your water. 
Good enough is good enough.

If you ARE going to buy a meter, the PWT is much better than a TDS but
frankly, I'd fuggedaboudit!

You've got a machine, follow the instructions and believe the manual,
'cause it's been well researched.
