Yep yep OK, thanks ode. I wouldn't say I make it that strong, only up to 15ppm which drops to 11 in 24 hours and then drops to 9 after 72 or more hours and tends to stabilise at that. I just need to improve my methodology in record keeping. Maybe that's another course I could do, 'scientific notation', I dropped out of my 'electronics' course, oops who said electronics, can someone sing that monty python song, I've just put a bucket on my head. <g>

Cheers...N.

If you make it quite strong, seal it up real good at least for a good while so it can do what it will do with what is there, rather than with whatever else can get in and take its' place.

Not so strong doesn't make as much difference..the concentration of things for other things to react *with* are less and it does what it does with what should be there, faster..that being "hydrate" to protect, rather than react.

Have noted some discussion regarding sealed containers and CS in the past, (sorry but I didn't follow the conversation all that closely.......the light bulb has just started to flicker), and have just realised what may be going on with my CS.

I have a 1 litre, (don't know what that is in ounces, about 1/3 of a gallon? ), clear bottle with a glass stopper and several other clear glass containers which have screw tops with rubber inserts and I have noticed that the glass bottle always has silver plating out on the glass and the CS goes a pale golden colour while the other ones, with the screw tops, stay clear with no plateout. The discussion a while ago regarding 'air' has just made me see that this is what's probably going on with my CS. I haven't bothered about it at all in the past, but did wonder why this bottle always changed compared to the others. Like I said, I have never really concerned myself over this and have just put it down to 'one of lifes mysteries' and only now see that CS should be kept in an air-tight container........yes? Not looking for an indepth analysis but this sounds like it could right.........yes?

I usually use 40ml, (think that's approx 1 ounce), as a starter when producing a new batch and it may be this particular pale golden CS which results in colour, (can't distinguish what colour other than clear though as it's so faint, maybe green, I think green comes before any yellow hue), in my 'new' batch on occasion. I rotate about 4 or 5, one litre containers and it's a while till I get to the glass one with the glass stopper. Need to take note the next time I use this 'coloured' batch as a seed and see what happens with the result.

It's OK, I've just never concerned myself unduly with the 'science' of CS in the past that's all, I usually just 'make it and take it'.

Neville.
