While I realize this thread is supposed to be done now, I just want to clear
up this one little point, since you did bring it up: I *do* have personal 
knowledge. I have personally visited a number of "production facilities" 
throughout the Southeast U.S., the first time in 1997, and as recently as 
2002. And, I grew up on an old-fashioned family farm which was actually 
quite humane by modern standards -- the animals had a pretty nice life 
before they were slaughtered. And I believe you're right that the feet 
are not removed, "just" the ends of the toes, and that chopping off the 
ends of the beaks is more common that full debeaking (but owch!!! anyway). 

So I do indeed have the authority of personal knowledge, as a first person
witness to these all-too-common practices.

As long as we're on the subject, I do hope you understand that I never
accused *you* of these practices, nor criticized you for running a chicken
farm. As I said before, I know there are some facilities which are more
humane, and I have no reason to disbelieve yours was one of them.
