It is the cost of testing for certification for "food grade" that makes it so 
expensive. To be certified every manufactured batch needs to be tested to be 
certified. So the same company can produce both food grade and non-food grade 
DE that is the exact same product.
I have purchased food grade that is slightly whiter than DE that is equally 
pure but not certified. I think that can be simply from different producers or 
batches. DE is mined from ancient fresh water lakes that dried up. There is 
also marine DE, which has a different mineral profile...........
I have used both my food grade and my "regular" DE (pure no additives, no 
insecticides added, not heat processed, etc) with equal success---------at 
least  I could not  tell any difference expect price, and the slight color 
difference.
