Hi Laura, You can do that. It is a good start. But you may need to do some homework. Its really important to know how much current is flowing because that is what strips the silver from one of the rods.
First question is what is the Anode area. This is the area of the rod connected to + of the batteries. we need this to work out what the max current should be. It is almost essential to use some form of current controller to limit the current to 1mA per square inch of anode area. That should prevent a runaway condition where the silver goes murky. So you will need to connect up a milliAmp meter to get a reading to check the current. So , What size electrodes do you have? In the archives is reference to a Faraday spreadsheet which will then help you work out how long to run the set up in the volume of container to get to 10 ppm. None of this is accurate because of all sorts of If's and Buts; there is just immense satisfaction knowing that you know a bit about the process. And almost anything you make will work satisfactorily. I would perhaps experiment with smaller quantity of water to learn how to set and adjust and control current. Oh, and you must have stirring if you are going to run it hours. That is unless you are going to give it a whirl every now and then.
