From what I understand, the network is a high fault tolerance interconnected "star" topology network. The antenna is omnidirectional because of this. It has a high poll rate plus it's event activated traffic. E.g. If someone goes to the toilet at night and uses the light. Or when high current draw. Devices are used such As irons, toasters and kettles. This would be used for analytics in a data warehouse by the utilities company. They also have zigbee radio connectivity so that new devices can provide detailed on their operation which would then be used by the utilities company. I have done some work on this as I have worked in healthcare.
