I forgot the proportions for those who want to try it…

“So, he looked it up in an old 1880's doctor book my great grandparents had
and mixed up a mixture of one part gunpowder to three parts lard. It drew the
poison out and saved the finger.”

I found an interesting website that had this recipe for the gunpowder salve
along with an explanation…

“Yes, I have an aunt who married a doctor. He said he should start selling
the stuff under the name GPL Ointment. (Gun Powder & Lard)

He said the sulphur in the gunpowder was like antibiotic, the charcoal and
saltpeter in the gunpowder drew out the poison and the lard was what held it
all in place.”

There was lots of interesting and practical information.
