Hi - interesting stuff, especially about the coffee cups!!!
Could anyone who knows, please advise how important it is to start a new
batch off with a little of the previous batch - ie. is it advisable to use a
starter?

It color on the inside of the glass probably helps seed the next batch.

That will wipe off with a paper towel.
I actually only wipe and rinse <g>. My plastic generating containers do
have some colour on the walls but that does not seem to be of any
consequence.
