This is NOT true and shouldn't be continually passed around. It is generally adults who had chicken pox that are at risk of getting shingles; however, although most cases of shingles are caused by the varicella-zoster virus (the cause of chicken pox), a few cases are caused by herpes simplex, so it is true that some people can get shingles from a latent herpes simplex infection even if they have never had chicken pox. Do a search on this term: chicken pox shingles -- and you will learn more about the fact that most people who get shingles are those who had chicken pox as a child.
