First, a magnet is used to turn the stirring rod/balls. The magnet is typically mounted on a geared motor mounted under the container.
Second, I've thought about stirring with just magnetic fields. Since this solution is ionized, a decent magnetic field will cause the flow to curve. I don't know if a static field from a permanent magnet would do a good enough job, haven't looked into it that far. This might need a changing field from an electromagnet. Unless the permanent magnet would work, it seems the old rotating magnet on a motor version is the way to go.
