I glued a couple neodymium disk magnets to a steel washer glued to the hub of a small computer fan and put that beneath a thin sheet of plywood, under my jar. This spins one of those little teflon covered lab magnets, very nicely. Without the steel washer, the magnets confuse the position sensing circuit that turns the motor.

I hadn't thought that the rotating magnetic field might torque the silver water, directly, if gently.
